A method and apparatus for transferring data between points in a network is disclosed which is particularly applicable to the transfer of data over digital communications links (109) that have signalling channels and data channels such as integrated services digital networks (ISDN) equipment (111, 113). The method and apparatus enables an ISDN network terminating unit (111) to have low bandwidth data channel for downloading emails from a computer (103) without the need for a dial up connection.
