In order to allow geographically separate SONET/SDH networks to be interconnected transparently without changes in clock content, payload and overhead, it has conventionally been necessary to use dark fibre. For relatively low bandwidth operators this is prohibitively expensive. The present invention proposes a scheme using a mapping and virtual concatenation scheme to allow SONET/SDH to be carried in a bandwidth efficient manner over a SONET/SDH link whilst maintaining clock integrity.

Afin de permettre de séparer géographiquement des réseaux SONET/SDH devant être interconnectés de manière transparente sans modifications de contenu d'horloge, de charge utile et de temps système, auparavant il fallait utiliser des fibres sombres. Pour des opérateurs à largeur de bande relativement basse, cela représente un coût prohibitif. L'invention concerne un schéma utilisant un mappage et un schéma de concaténation virtuelle afin de permettre au SONET/SDH d'être porté d'une manière efficace sur une largeur de bande sur une liaison SONET/SDH, tout en maintenant l'intégrité d'horloge.
