ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus for treating cellulosic pulp with oxygen under alkali conditions and at raised pressure and temperature is disclosed. The method comprises pumping a pulp suspension to which alkali has been added and which has been steam heated through whirl mixers to a reaction chamber or chambers, and mixing oxygen with the pulp suspension in the whirl mixers, and discharging the pulp suspension from the re- action chamber to expand on two stages permitting separation of oxygen and steam, the pulp suspension in the reaction chamber having a consistency of two to eight percent and being as saturated as possible with oxygen.
