A method and apparatus for separation of carbonaceous particles from fly ash utilises an electrostatic separator having a plurality of separation zones (11) arranged to define a downward serpentine pathway for particulate material, the separation zones (11) comprising spaced parallel planar electrodes (8, 8a, 9, 9a) with collectors (13) positioned at the outlet of each separation zone to direct the respective carbonaceous and non-carbonaceous particles to respective storage hoppers. The feedstock is introduced to the apparatus via a rotary valve at a temperature of about 100 °C and the potential difference between respective pairs of electrodes is about 30KV.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil pour séparer les particules riches en carbone des cendres volantes. Dans cet appareil, un filtre électrostatique a une pluralité de zones de séparation (11) agencées pour définir un trajet descendant sinueux pour les particules, les zones de séparation (11) comprenant des électrodes planes parallèles et espacées (8, 8a, 9, 9a) avec des collecteurs (13) placés aux sorties de chaque zone de séparation pour diriger les particules riches en carbone et les cendres volantes vers les trémies de stockage séparées.
