ABSTRACT An ion exchange water softener is regenerated with a saturated brine solution. The solid regenerant chemical used to make the brine is stored in a large container that holds enough solid chemical to make enough brine to regenerate the softener many times. The water used to make the brine is prevented from entering the large container except for a few minutes immediately before brine is needed to regenerate the softener, and substantially all liquid is drained from the container when the softener is regenerated.
