ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for the ultrasonic examination of an object has a housing filled with a liquid coupling medium, the housing having a substantially horizontal upper surface provided with an aperture and a flexible coupling membrane covering the aperture in a liquid-tight seal. Transducers contained within said hous- ing and immersed in said coupling mediums transmit pulses of ultrasonic energy through the aperture into an object positioned adjacent the aperture and receive echoes of the pulses reflected through the aperture by acoustic impedance discontinuities within the object. An open storage header tank for the liquid coupling medium communicates with the housing and the atmosphere to main- tain the pressure of the coupling medium on the coupling membrane constant during flexing of the membrane.
