Waterborne acoustic signals are received and processed into electrical driver signals to energize a transducer (30) held in selectively controllable vibration- transmitting engagement with a tooth (29) of an underwater diver. The transducer (30) converts the electrical signals into low amplitude sound-associated vibrations imparted to the tooth (29), through the jawbone and skull to the cochlea for processing into electrical signals carried to the brain and perceived as intelligible sound. The addition of conventional broadcast permits two-way underwater communication. The transducer (30) can be labially or occlusively mounted, preferably against an upper or maxillary tooth (29) and the force of engagement between the transducer (30) and the tooth (29) is at least partially controlled by the diver to optimize communication characteristics.

Des signaux acoustiques produits sous l'eau son reçus et traités pour être transformés en signaux de commande électrique, pour alimenter un transducteur (30) maintenu en contact de transmission, avec la dent (29) d'un plongeur sous-marin. Le transducteur (30) convertit les signaux électriques en vibrations de faible amplitude associées aux sons, qui sont transmises à la dent (29) en passant par le maxillaire et le crâne jusqu'au limaçon pour être transformées en signaux électriques acheminés jusqu'au cerveau et perçus sous forme de son intelligible. L'adjonction d'un système de transmission classique permet d'obtenir une communication sous-marine bidirectionnelle. Le transducteur (30) peut être monté sur les lèvres ou de manière occlusive, de préférence contre une dent (29) supérieure ou maxillaire. La force exercée par le contact entre le transducteur (30) et la dent (29) est régulée au moins partiellement par le plongeur afin d'optimiser les caractéristiques de communication.
