ABSTRACT As original dialogue recorded live at the time of shooting of a motion picture is often of unacceptable quality a technique, known as post-synchron- ising, wherein the dialogue is re-recorded in a studio and mixed with music and sound effects to form the final sound track, has evolved. A major problem with this technique is in ensuring synchronism between words and mouth movements. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention a computer system with a large disc storage is arranged to record and automatically post- synchronise new dialogue with an original guide track. The system adjusts the timing of the new words primarily by altering the duration of the silent gaps between words and, in acceptable situations, by adjusting the duration of the speech elements. The decisions controlling this "microediting" of the speech are based on a knowledge of the production and perception of speech and will therefore ensure that the edited speech sounds natural. The processing does not necessarily take place in real time. It takes place during recording of the new dialogue, and if necessary, during wind-back and playback phases of the operation and thus causes no delays.
