ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for imparting a permanent variegated pattern to a reconstituted tobacco sheet by selectively densifying areas of the sheet in the presence of heat. A constant pressure holds the sheet against the face of a drum and causes the sheet to move in unison with the drum face while intermittently transmitting additional pressure for short spaced intervals of time in the presence of heat. Thereby, areas of the sheet are selectively densified fox darkening such areas an amount depending upon the amount of densification.
