Abstract of the Disclosure An improved apparatus and method of recognizing character is disclosed. The side frame structures of characters or figures are discriminated by left and right margin detectors and corresponding left and right side frame recognition circuits. A final character discrimination circuit synthesizes both the results of a conventional character recognition unit and the frame recognition circuits, and permits discrimination between similarly shaped characters.
