An apparatus for producing a digital depiction of a signal (10) which is adaptive to the signal itself. A constant rate sampling means, such as an analogue to digital converter (2), samples the signal (10) at a constant rate and produces a first digital depiction (12) of a signal. A transformation means (14) is responsive to the first digital depiction (12) and produces a second digital depiction based on the evolution of the signal. The transformation means may be capable of determining when a predetermined threshold level has been crossed and measuring the time interval between predetermined threshold level crossings. The transformation means (14) may include a logic arrangement and a timer counter and is run from a clock signal (16) from the same clock (6) as drives the sampling means. A method of adapting a conventional ADC (2) to adaptively sample the signal (10) by adding a transformation means (14) run off the same clock (6) as the ADC (2) is also provided.
L'invention concerne un dispositif servant à produire une représentation numérique d'un signal (10) qui est susceptible de s'adapter au signal même. Un moyen d'échantillonnage à vitesse constante, tel qu'un convertisseur analogique/numérique (2), échantillonne le signal (10) à une vitesse constante et produit une première représentation numérique du signal (12). Un moyen de transformation (14) est réceptif à la première représentation numérique (12) et produit une seconde représentation numérique en fonction de l'évolution du signal. Le moyen de transformation peut être capable de déterminer lorsqu'un seuil prédéterminé a été croisé et de mesurer le laps de temps entre les croisements du seuil prédéterminé. Le moyen de transformation (14) peut comprendre un ensemble logique et un compteur de temporisation et est en relation avec le signal d'horloge (16) provenant de la même horloge (6) qui commande le moyen d'échantillonnage. L'invention concerne également un procédé destiné à adapter un CAN classique (2) en vue de l'échantillonnage adaptatif du signal (10), ledit procédé consistant à ajouter un moyen de transformation (14) qui n'est plus en relation avec la même horloge (6) comme le CAN (2).
