A method and apparatus to control gas breakout in transport tanks. The method involves the step of coupling in series hook up to a transport tank, a pressure relief valve and a gas scrubber. The pressure relief valve limits the quantity of gas being released from the transport tank and the gas scrubber scrubs all gas that is released. By limiting the gas being scrubbed to only such gas as is released by virtue of the operation of the pressure relief valve, the volume of gas being scrubbed and, consequently, the costs associated with scrubbing the gas are drastically reduced.
