ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for determining the shape and/or size of a freely falling object (1), particularly a drop of liquid or semi-liquid material, such as molten glass in particular. One end of the object is detected by means of two photo-diodes (7, 8) which are located at a given distance (s) apart in the fall path of the object, thereby enabling the fall speed of the object to be determined as the detected end of the object moves between the two photo-diodes (7, 8). An image of that part of the object located momentarily be- tween the two photo-diodes (7, 8) is projected onto an elongated photo-diode array (9) which is arranged between the two photo-diodes (7, 8) and which extends perpendi- cularly to the fall direction of the object (1). The photo-diode array (9) is scanned periodically at a given time interval a large number of times during movement of the object past the array. This provides information relating to the width of the object at a large number of locations along the length of the object, the mutual distances between these width determinations corresponding to the distances fallen by the object between the differ- ent scans of the diode array (9). These fall distances are caculated on the basis of the aforesaid calculated speed at which the object falls and the known time interval between the different scans of the array. The shape and size of the object can be caculated on the basis of this information.
