PHN 9547 14-3-1980 ABSTRACT "Method and arrangement for determining the velocity of a vehicle". With vehicle presence detectors which utilize an inductive loop arranged in the road surface, the presence of a vehicle over the loop is detected by, for example, measuring the frequency variation of an oscillator whose inductive loop is the frequency-deter- mining element. If the velocity of the vehicle must be determined by means of two of these detectors which are arranged at a predetermined distance from one another in the travelling direction, the problem is encountered that the presence of the vehicle can indeed be determined in a reliable manner but that the determination of the instants at which the vehicle activates the loops is relatively inaccurate, so that the velocity derived from these instants is also in accurate. According to the in- vention a first measuring value is measured for each detector for a first measure time interval in which the measuring value exceeds a response threshold and a second measuring value is measured for a predetermined second measuring time interval shifted a predetermined period of time relative to the first measuring time interval, the measuring value in the second measuring time interval being below the response threshold. The instant at which each of the detectors is activated is determined by inter- polation between the first and the second measuring value.
