A B S T R A C T This invention relates to a method for increasing the blast temper- ature in a shaft furnace in which the blast gas is at least partially passed through a plasma. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method of the invention having a plasma burner in which the plasma is generated. The method and arrangement according to the present invention render it possible to increase the temperature of the blast air for a shaft furnace to the desired value in a simple, economic and efficient way. A sub- stantially more rapid change in the energy balance of the blast furnace is obtained than is possible by increasing coke charging to the blast furnace.
