ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed for operating optical distribution networks, in which the modulated radiation of a laser is transmitted over an optical distributer to several optical reception stations, and the reception stations are connected back to the transmission station, through a monitoring unit and a return channel transmitter. In order to permit an interruption of the optical transmission path at an optical receiver, for service or measurement purposes, without disconnection of all the other optical receivers supplied by the common optical distributer, each reception station is provided with an additional signal connection. Through this additional signal connection, a signal is transmitted when service tasks are to be performed at the optical receiver. This signal indicates to the transmission station that no interference exists, and that transmission needs not be interrupted. The monitoring unit transmits this message over the return channel transmitter to the transmission station.
