The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for rapidly stopping in a controlled fashion a roll set comprised of a plurality of rolls. Typically, such a set is launched from a slitter (1), wherefrom it is rolled along a downward ramp (7) to a conveyor (5). On the downward ramp (7), along side the conveyor (5), is located a number of adjacent stop gages (6) suited for being controlled between a home position and an operating position, respectively. For each roll (4), a required number of such stop gages (6), located in the rolling path of the roll, is selected to operate, while the rest of the stop gages are left in their home positions. In this fashion, each roll (4) can be stopped individually even when the rolls move simultaneously and, moreover, the stopping force can be adjusted separately for each roll.
