ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for transforming the character-width, measured in grid-spaces, in representing characters in different reproducing units. Where the ratio of character-widths is not a whole number, the differences between the calculated values and the respective next lowest whole-number values of character-width are determined and added. If the error-total reaches or exceeds the value "one", a gap of one grid-space is inserted between two characters. The invention is for use mainly in conjunction with text-systems in which the same text is released both to a screen and to a printing unit.
