2094153 9207058 PCTABS00012 The invention relates to a method and composition for cleaning articles made of, for example, metal, ceramic or glass. The composition of the invention comprises: one or more C9-C12 aromatic hydrocarbons of formula (I), wherein R is CH3, R2 is hydrogen or a straight-chained or branched lower alkyl, and R3 is hydrogen or a C1-C5 straight-chained alkyl; and a C7-C10 organic polar component, wherein the solvent composition comprises from about 99 to about 1 weight percent of the aromatic hydrocarbon and from about 1 to about 99 weight percent of the organic polar component. The invention also relates to a method of cleaning a dirty article, comprising the steps of: contacting the dirty article with a composition of the invention, the contact resulting in a solvent residue being deposited on a surface of the article; and removing the solvent residue by contacting the article with an aqueous medium.
