ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of and composition for cleaning metals Includes a caustic water bath comprising a water solution containing a mixture of from about 20 to 95% alkali hydroxide with from about 5 to 80% alkali gluconate and 0 to 6% tri- ethanolamine serving as a chelating agent. The method includes immersing the metal to be cleaned in a molten salt bath prior to immersing the metal in the caustic bath, which serves to dissolve and sequester metal oxides on the surface of said metal. The bath, which is maintained at 200 to 240°F., may optionally include an alkali catalyst and a complexing agent for inorganic salts.
