The present invention provides a method and composition for controlling the growth of microorganisms in aqueous systems, such as industrial process waters. The method includes the steps of adding a synergistically effective amount of a biocide, 2-bromo-2-nitrostyrene ("BNS"), and an oxidant, peracetic acid, to industrial process waters to control microorgamism growth. The composition of the present invention comprises a synergistically effective amount of a biocide, 2-bromo-2-nitrostyrene, and an oxidant, peracetic acid, to control microorganism growth. The method and composition of the present invention are particularly effective in the treatment of pulp and paper water processing systems.

L'invention porte sur un procédé et une composition limitant la croissance de micro-organismes en milieu aqueux par exemple dans des eaux de processus industriels. Ledit procédé consiste à ajouter auxdites eaux une quantité à effet synergique d'un biocide, le 2-bromo-2-nitrostyrène (BNS) et un oxydant, l'acide peracétique. Ladite composition comprend une quantité à effet synergique d'un biocide, le 2-bromo-2-nitrostyrène (BNS) et un oxydant, l'acide peracétique. Le procédé et la composition de l'invention sont particulièrement efficaces pour traiter les eaux des systèmes de production des pâtes et des papiers.
