A B S T R A C T A method for destroying or inhibiting the growth of harmful microorganisms in an environment contaminated or susceptible to contamination by harmful microorganisms which comprises contacting said environment with a lethal or inhibitory effective amount of an antimicrobial glycol ether of the general formula Image (I) in which R is a) a straight-chain, branched or cyclic C4- to C12- alkyl radical, the alkyl chain of which can also be interrupted by up to two oxygen atoms, b) an aryl radical having 6 to 12 C atoms, the aryl nucleus of which can be substituted by one or more lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen radicals or c) an arylalkyl or aryloxyalkyl radical having 7 to 13 C atoms, the alkyl chain of which can also be interrupted by up to two oxygen atoms and the aryl radical of which can be substituted by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, chloro or bromo radicals. The invention also applies to the compound of Formula (I), and optionally the compound of Formula (II), incorporated in a personal care product, e.g., a cosmetic.
