Abstract of the disclosure A method and compositions for melting an aqueous solid such as ice, snow or frost by utilizing the heat generated when an exothermic compound selected from the group consisting of anhydrous calcium chloride, calcium chloride monohydrate, calcium chloride dihydrate, calcium bromide dihydrate, anhydrous magnesium chloride, anhydrous strontium chloride, anhydrous lithium chloride, lithium chloride monohydrate and anhydrous lithium bromide is dissolved into water or when the exothermic compound in a finely powdered state dispersed in a volatile organic solvent is brought in contact with an aqueous solid.
