The present invention provides a method for treating wounds and diseases in mammals, caused by mammalian cells involved in an inflammatory response, by altering indigenous in vivo levels of peroxynitrous acid, and salts thereof. The method comprises contacting the mammalian cells with a therapeutically effective amount of a reactive oxygen species mediator, wherein the reactive oxygen species mediator is selected from the group consisting of pyruvates, pyruvate precursors, a- keto acids having four or more carbon atoms, precursors of ce-keto acids having four or more carbon atoms, and the salts thereof, wherein mediation of reactive oxygen species results in mediation of peroxynitrous acid. The present invention further provides a pharmaceutical composition for treating wounds and diseases in mammals, caused by mammalian cells involved in an inflammatory response, by altering indigenous in vivo levels of peroxynitrous acid, and salts thereof.
Cette invention concerne une méthode de traitement chez les mammifères de blessures et de maladies provoquées par des cellules de mammifère intervenant dans une réaction inflammatoire, par la modification de niveaux indigènes in vivo d'acide péroxynitrique et de ses sels. Le procédé consiste à mettre en contact des cellules de mammifère avec une dose thérapeutiquement efficace d'un médiateur d'espèces d'oxygène réactif, le médiateur des espèces d'oxygène réactif étant sélectionné dans le groupe constitué de pyruvates, de précurseurs de pyruvate, d'acides .alpha.-kéto possédant au moins quatre atomes de carbone, des précurseurs d'acides .alpha.-kéto possédant au moins quatre atomes de carbone et de leurs sels dans lequel la médiation d'espèces d'oxygène réactif provoque la médiation d'acide péroxynitrique. Cette invention concerne également une composition pharmaceutique de traitement chez les mammifères de lésions et de maladies provoquées par des cellules de mammifère intervenant dans une réaction inflammatoire par modification des niveaux in vivo indigènes d'acide péroxynitrique et de ses sels.
