METHOD AND COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR DATA ENTRY OF BAR CODE SYMBOLS Abstract of the Disclosure The method and system of the present invention provide for the data entry of bar code data into computer programs that are designed to accept bar code data (reader application programs) and for the data entry of bar code data into computer programs that are not designed to accept bar code data (non-reader application programs). The bar code data is entered as a contiguous stream of characters, rather that one character at a time, so that lengthy bar code data strings will not be corrupted. Additionally, the method and system of the present invention provide for two- way communication between bar code-reading and processing services and a reader application program so that the reader application program may, among other things, recon- figure the bar code-reading reading and processing ser- vices. The present invention replaces the prior art combination of a bar code-reading input device and special- ity hardware by embedding hardware and software within a PC. As a result, an application program operating on the PC can reconfigure the embedded hardware and software. Both reader and non-reader application programs can operate on the PC and accept bar code data.
