The object to be treated is immersed in an antimicrobial solution containing positively or negatively charged antimicrobial agent in the presence of a scavenger element which, over time, scavenges the antimicrobial agent from the solution. Also provided is a container for carrying out the sterilization or disinfection. The container comprises a main body portion defining a reservoir capable of receiving the object to be treated and the antimicrobial solution, a scavenger element and closure means.
