ABSTRACT Method and device for chemical analysis of a liquid sample according to the principle of X-ray fluorescence, especially energy dispersively in the case when the resolution of the radiation detector may be lower than the natural X-ray energy differences between the elements contained in the sam- ple, in which method and device the sample is exposed to a primary radiation and the X-ray fluorescence spectrum, or parts of it, excited by said radia- tion is measured with said detector with the accuracy permitted thereby a series of selected reference samples having known properties is measured in a similar manner as the sample to be analysed, an equation group, which is preferably linear, is formulated on the basis of the values obtained by measuring the samples, and the fluorescence intensities of the various ele- ments of the liquid sample is calculated from said equation group. Prefer- ably the device comprises a measuring head with a central portion carrying the radiation source and the detector and a rotatable annular part surround- ing said central portion and carrying the samples spaced apart along its periphery so that they may be brought in the radiation path successively, said measuring head being connected to a computer programmed to carry out the numerical analysis based on the obtained intensity values.
