ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE For positioning a working tool such as for example a riveting device or a riveting pack relative to part on which at least one punctual material trace was previously formed at a predetermined location on the part, and of which approximate coordinates are known, so as to bring a characteristic working direction of the tool opposite such trace, a method comprises bringing the tool adjacent to said trace, detecting deviation between the tool working direction and said trace by means of a centering sensor, servocontrolling the tool position to cancel such deviation, detecting the orientation of the working direction of the tool relative to a normal to the surface of the part at that trace by means of a perpendicularity detector and servocontrolling the tool orientation so as to make such working direction coincide with such normal. Said method and means for implementing it can be applied in particular to automatic assembling of structural elements of large dimensions such as aircraft fuselage or wing section.
