A method and a device for determining a physical property of a medium, such as a concentration of a substance in the medium are disclosed. The device comprises a light source (2), a probe with at least a first and a second optical fiber (5, 6) positioned alongside each other, said first optical fiber (5) being arranged to deliver radiation from the light source to a sample (1) and to collect first backscattered radiation from said sample, said second optical fiber (6) being arranged to collect second backscattered radiation, a spectrometer (7) for producing first and second backscattered radiation, a spectrometer (7) for producing first and second signals based on said first and second backscattered radiation, and a processor (9) adapted to determine a differential backscatter signal from said first and second signals and to calculate said physical property by curve fitting said measured differential backscatter signal to a backscatter function. Depending on whether the diameter of the optical fibers is smaller or greater than the mean free path of photons in the sample different backscatter functions are used.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif qui permettent de déterminer une propriété physique d'un support, telle que la concentration d'une substance présente dans le support. Le dispositif comprend une source lumineuse (2), une sonde munie d'au moins une première et une seconde fibres optiques (5, 6) placées l'une à côté de l'autre. La première fibre optique (5) est arrangée de façon à émettre un rayonnement de la source lumineuse en direction d'un échantillon (1), et à recueillir de ce dernier un premier rayonnement rétrodiffusé. La seconde fibre optique (6) est arrangée de façon à recueillir un second rayonnement rétrodiffusé. Le dispositif comprend également un spectromètre (7) destiné à produire un premier et un second rayonnements rétrodiffusés, un spectromètre (7) destiné à produire un premier et un second signaux basés sur lesdits premier et second rayonnements rétrodiffusés; et un processeur (9) adapté pour déterminer un signal de rétrodiffusion différentielle à partir desdits premier et second signaux et calculer ladite propriété physique par ajustement de courbe dudit signal de rétrodiffusion différentielle mesuré relativement à une fonction de rétrodiffusion. Selon que le diamètre de la fibre optique est inférieur ou supérieur au libre parcours moyen de photons dans l'échantillon, différentes fonctions de rétrodiffusion sont utilisées.
