ABSTRACT A method and device are provided for grinding a shaft extending forwardly of a workpiece of dissimilar configuration utilizing a centreless grinder to grind at least one surface of the shaft while the shaft rotates about the longitudinal axis of the shaft. For example, an eccentric shaft of one diameter may be ground extending from an axle of different diameter. The advantages of centreless grinding are increased speed and accuracy of finished surfaces however complex shapes are generally considered unsuitable for the application of the centreless grinding process. The invention relates to a method and device wherein the workpiece is mounted in a chuck, the shaft to be ground extending forwardly from the chuck. The longitudinal axis of the shaft and the axis of rotation of the chuck are aligned in a collinear relationship either manually or automatically. The shaft is inserted between the regulating and grinding wheels of the centreless grinder the shaft rotatably supported upon a restraining support. The shaft and chuck rotate about a common axis under the rotational driving influence of the regulating and grinding wheels. In one embodiment the shaft is automatically centred or aligned with the chuck axis of rotation under the force of engaging the shaft with the grinder.
