The present invention relates to a device and method for controlling, or compensating for, the deformation of a crane boom in lifting or placing a load. The deformation of a crane boom is detected or measured and the detected or measured deformation is applied to a controller device. A target value for the position of the crane boom is applied to the controller device and the controller device outputs signals which control or drive at least one positioner for the crane boom so that the crane boom is maintained substantially in its target position.
