Abstract of the Disclosure The invention provides a method for selectively removing or controlling concentrations of toxic gas components within cigarette smoke by utilizing as a filter element, the product of a filter rod-making apparatus, using as garniture feed, at least one polyolefin-containing substrate characterized in that said substrate is treated with an effective amount of at least one active modifier component comprising at least one mem- ber selected from sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, potassium permanganate, manganese dioxide, dissolved or dispersed in a nonionic spin solution.
