With a method for determining shape changes of toroidal test objects, preferably of pneumatic tires, the test object is illuminated with coherent light. Radiation reflected by the test object during two deformation conditions of the test object is divided in an interferometer into two partial rays, which are offset from one another, the phase of one partial ray being displaced in phase steps compared to the other partial ray. The two partial rays are depicted on an image sensor system with the help of optical imaging components, and the signals that are generated from depiction on the image sensor system are digitized. The digitized signals of the phase steps of both deformation conditions of the test objects are subsequently processed to a modulo-2pi image in an image processing system. In order to be able to determine shape changes on toroidal test objects in a single test cycle with little or no interference, the test object is illuminated in a coaxial annular manner, and a partial ray is shifted on an orbit relative to the other partial ray in order to offset the partial rays from one another. The modulo-2pi image is directly filtered optically, and the filtered modulo-2pi image is processed in such a way that a deformation value is determined, which is compared to a specified threshold value.
