In a method for distributing letters in which the letters are separated and the address information affixed to the letters read, it is provided that, for letters belonging to a given sorting class, an identification code is allocated to each letter during reading of the address information in order to identify the position of the allocated letter in a stack of letters and that each identification code is allocated to an element of a given sequence of distribution positions and that the allocation of the identification codes to the elements of the sequence of distribution positions is indicated.
