ABSTRACT A method and an apparatus for feeding longitudinally moving pieces of timber into a timber processing machine operates according to the prin- ciple that the contours in the longitudinal direction of the piece of timber are first measured by measuring devices which exert minimal pressure on the piece of timber, after which the piece of timber is advanced to at least one control device which is arranged immed- iately adjacent to the processing machine and acts laterally upon the piece of timber with a considerably larger align- ment force. Measurement signals from measuring devices are processed in a conventional manner in a computer from which the order signals are sent to the control unit with a determined delay. The control device operates both as an alignment device, by aligning the piece of timber to the necessary feed attitude calculated in the computer, and as a control device in the stricter sense of the term by controlling the piece of timber while it is being fed into the processing machine.
