The invention relates to a method for continuous monitoring of an analyte concentration by determining its progression in the living body of a human or animal, in which analyte values y(t n) correlating with the concentration to be determined are determined for consecutive points in time t n. For predicting a prediction value for an analyte value y(t n0+.DELTA.t) over a prediction period .DELTA.t a function F (t k, t k-.DELTA.n, t k-2.DELTA.n, ..., t k-(m- 2).DELTA.n, t k-(m-1).DELTA.n) , which depends on analyte values y(t k) , y(t k- .DELTA.n) , y(t k-2.DELTA.n) , ..., y(t k-(m-2).DELTA.n, y(t k-(m-1).DELTA.n) is determined, which can be used to approximate the progression of the analyte values y(t n) at time t n0 in the vicinity U of an analyte value y(t n0) with a pre-determined accuracy .sigma., such that (see formula I) whereby .DELTA.n is an integer, and-subsequently the function F is used to calculate the prediction value y(t n0 + .DELTA.t) =F(t n0 , t n0 - .DELTA.n, ... ..., t(n0 - (m - 2).DELTA.n),t(n0 - (m - 1).DELTA.n))
