ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a method of passing through critical rotational speeds of an elongate rotor. The method comprises alternately coupling to and uncoupling from the rotor critical frequency altering means as a result of radial movement of the rotor as the rotor approaches its critical speeds. In this manner, a change in the frequencies of the critical rotational speeds and/or their amplitude is produced.
