The invention relates to a method for monitoring the position of plate gear (30, 31) for fishing gear, comprising measuring at least one angle (ALPHA 30, ALPHA 31) for at least a part of the plate gear, and based on the measurement providing a position indication for the plate gear with regard to bottom contact. The invention also relates to an apparatus for performing the method.
