According to this invention a C.F.R. engine (26) is alternately supplied with a fuel being manufactured (22), sampled from the discharge line of the mixer and, through a line (24), with a reference product (25) of which the cetane number is known, by means of two separate supply circuits (22, 24) each having a high pressure fuel pump (33, 34), the said C.F.R. engine (26) operating at a constant compression ratio.
