A method and an apparatus for providing automated speech-to-text encoding and decoding for hearing-impaired persons. A broadband subscriber terminal interfaces to: (a) a network to convey speech packets thereover, (b) a telephone to convey speech information, and (c) a display device to display textual information of spoken words. A speech buffer in the subscriber terminal receives speech data and a processor decodes and displays textual representations of speech on the display device. A database stores voice and/or speech patterns that are used by a speech analyzer to recognize an incoming caller and to associate a name or characteristic (e.g., male or female) with the incoming call. A tonal and inflection analyzer analyzes speech to add punctuation to the displayed text. A detector, such as a DTMF detector, responds to subscriber inputs to activate/deactivate speech recognition or other functions.
Une méthode et un appareil pour fournir un codage et décodage automatisés de la parole en texte pour les personnes malentendantes. Un terminal à large bande d'abonné interface avec : a) un réseau pour y transmettre des paquets de parole, b) un téléphone pour transmettre de l'information de parole et c) un dispositif d'affichage pour afficher de l'information textuelle des mots parlés. Une mémoire tampon vocale dans le terminal de l'abonné reçoit des données de parole et un processeur décode et affiche des représentations textuelles de la parole sur le dispositif d'affichage. Une base de données stocke les empreintes vocales et/ou les formes linguistiques utilisées par un analyseur de parole pour reconnaître un appelant et pour associer un nom ou une caractéristique (p. ex. mâle ou femelle) avec l'appel entrant. Un analyseur d'intonation et d'accentuation analyse la parole pour ajouter une ponctuation au texte affiché. Un détecteur, comme un détecteur multifréquence à double tonalité (DTMF), répond aux entrées de l'abonné pour activer/désactiver la reconnaissance de la parole ou d'autres fonctions.
