A cooling system includes a console and a head-cooling device. An operator applies the head-cooling device to the head of a patient. The console provides a cooling fluid to a fluid circulation space located between the cooling device and the patient's head under a positive gage pressure. Direct contact between the cooling fluid and the patient's head provides a relatively rapid induction of systemic hypothermia in the patient, thereby minimizing ischemic injury in the patient. The console also removes air from a channel disposed about an inner rim of the cooling device, using a negative gage pressure. Removal of the air from the channel seals the rim of the cooling device to the head of the patient, including portions of the channel in contact with hair of the patient's head, and minimizes leaking of the cooling fluid beyond the rim of the cooling device.
L'invention concerne un système de refroidissement. Ledit système comprend une console et un dispositif de refroidissement de tête. Un opérateur applique le dispositif de refroidissement de tête sur la tête d'un patient susceptible d'être atteint d'une lésion ischémique. La console fournit un fluide de refroidissement dans un espace de circulation de fluides situé entre le dispositif de refroidissement et la tête du patient sous une pression manométrique positive. Un contact direct entre le fluide de refroidissement et la tête du patient assure l'induction relativement rapide d'une hypothermie générale chez le patient, réduisant ainsi au minimum ou empêchant la lésion ischémique chez le patient. La console permet également d'éliminer l'air d'un canal placé près d'un bord intérieur du dispositif de refroidissement, à l'aide d'une pression manométrique négative. L'élimination de l'air du canal assure l'étanchéité du bord du dispositif de refroidissement sur la tête du patient, notamment des parties du canal en contact avec les cheveux de la tête du patient, et réduit au minimum la fuite du fluide de refroidissement au-delà du bord du dispositif de refroidissement.
