An apparatus and method for removing NOx from the exhaust of internal combustion engines The apparatus has a porous absorbent body saturated with a liquid alkaline electrolyte for absorption of NOx as nitrate and nitrite, in which body electrodes are distributed pairwise for electrochemical decomposition of the nitrate and nitrite to form nitrogen. The method uses the apparatus of the invention to decompose nitrates and nitrites into diatomic nitrogen.

Dispositif et méthode d'élimination des NOx des gaz d'échappement des moteurs à combustion interne. Le dispositif possède un corps absorbant poreux saturé d'un électrolyte liquide alcalin de type ligand pour l'absorption des NOx comme les nitrates et les nitrites, dans lequel les électrodes du corps sont distribuées par paires pour la décomposition électrochimique des nitrates et des nitrites en vue de former de l'azote. La méthode fait appel au dispositif visé par la présente invention pour décomposer les nitrates et les nitrites en azote diatomique.
