26340-FF ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Methods and devices are disclosed for separating plasma from red blood cells in a whole blood sample. The methods comprise contacting at least a portion of a bibulous support having a polycationic surface with a whole blood sample wherein the red blood cells but not plasma bind to the polycationic surface of the support and separating the plasma from the portion of the support to which the red blood cells are bound from the sample. The method has application among others to the determination of an analyte in a sample. Plasma separated from whole blood sample in accordance with the above procedure may be analyzed by any number of assay techniques. The devices that are disclosed can be used for determining an analyte in a whole blood sample and comprise a support at least a portion of which has a polycationic surface for binding red blood cells and at least a portion of which contains a specific binding pair [sbp] member non-diffusively bound thereto.
