The method and device separate signal from noise in repeated multi-dimensional records each containing some fixed signal additively mixed with independent instances of noise. In a first step, dimensions of the records are expressed as orthogonal sets of axes forming, for each dimension, a multidimensional space in which the records constitute data points. Then, the method performs a step of crossing respective first axes of the sets to form a filter on which the records are projected to produce corresponding projections, followed by a step of temporarily subtracting the projections from their respective records to produce temporary residuals. The signal contents in the temporary residuals is evaluated by means of a mathematical expression, and the first axis of each set is iteratively transformed by orthogonal rotations with the remaining axes of the same set so as to minimize the quantified presence of signal in the current temporary residual. The set of first axes from all the dimensions involved is accepted as one signal component when further minimization of the quantified presence of signal becomes essentially trivial, wherein minimization of the quantified presence of signal constitutes a quantitative criterion. The crossing, subtracting, evaluating, transforming and accepting procedure is repeated on the temporary residuals in order to extract further signal components as long as said residuals contain significant signal. Finally, the signal part of each record is represented in compact form by weights on all the retained signal components, and the signal part of the records is reconstituted by aplying the respective weights to the signal components and summing over components.
