ABSTRACT There is disclosed a conveyor system in which a main conveyor path is provided with at least one auxiliary path branch- ing off from and returning to the main path past a work station, whereby load carriers moving along the main path under the influence of gravity may be diverted from the main path onto the auxiliary path or paths for processing the workpieces at a work station, in which holding devices determine, from coded information on the carriers, whether individual carriers should proceed along the main path or be diverted onto an auxiliary path for processing at a work station. An elevator mechanism disposed in the path of the main path at the intersection of the auxiliary path with the main path enables carriers to proceed along the auxiliary path also under the influence of gravity so that carriers diverted onto the auxiliary path proceed also under the influence of gravity from the beginning to the end of the auxiliary path. The system is particularly susceptible of computer control so that optimum processing at work stations can be achieved.
