ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Metal hydroxides in a sludge are converted to a product which does not cause pollution; the sludge is dewatered until it becomes thixotropic and is formed into a thin layer or a film, which is subjected to a drying operation so that the layer or film is transformed into scales or grains of metal hydroxide; the scales or grains are subjected to calcination, the crystal water being removed and the scales or grains being transformed into a powder of metal oxide, which is non-poisonous.
