The invention calls for two Faraday elements (3 and 4), connected in series by optical means (34), to be positioned round a conductor (2). The Faraday effect on linearly polarized light (L1) which has only passed through the first Faraday element (3) is taken as a measure of current in a first measurement range. The Faraday effect on linearly polarized light (L2) which has passed through both Faraday elements (3, 4) is taken as a measure of current in a second measurement range.
