The method consists: - in dividing up the array of photosensitive cells into two frames of interlaced lines (1...576) of cells - in coupling each line (1, 2; ...575, 576) of one frame with the counterpart line of the other frame to obtain an ordered sequence of pairs of counterpart cells - in compounding (2; 3) for each pair the luminance values supplied by each cell - in transmitting the resulting luminance values associated with each pair of cells - in varying the timing of the system in order to both simplify the transmission coder-decoder and improve its performance. Application: videophones.
