PHN 8342 ABSTRACT A method of plasma-MIG welding in which a MIG-arc is maintained between a consumable electrode, continuously fed through a nozzle towards a workpiece, and said workpiece in a gas plasma which is generated by a plasma arc maintained between a non-consumable plasma electrode upstream of the nozzle and a second electrode in a gas flow passing through said nozzle, the power for maintaining said MIG-arc being supplied to the consumable electrode at a point situated downstream of said non-consumable plasma electrode and within said gas plasma; as that part of the consumable electrode at the level of the non-consumable plasma electrode does not carry current, instability of the plasma arc due to magnetic interaction between the gas plasma and the consumable electrode is prevented and the non-consumable plasma electrode as well as the guide for the consumable electrode can be arranged nearer to the nozzle so that the extension, i.e. the current carrying portion of the consumable electrode is reduced.
