The invention describes a method and device for breaking up and removing cores from castings, particularly from cylinder heads for internal combustion engines. A pneumatic hammer (20) is applied to the casting (1) while the latter is held against a low pressure cylinder (50). The casting is then subjected to horizontal oscillation by means of a receiver (60) itself subjected to reciprocating motion by means of a rod (72) and a double eccentric (80) rotatably driven by a geared motor (81).
